Defragmentation will be an eternity//
„Defragmentation in information technology is a way of reorganizing data in order to store them as a whole and not scattered in small bits and fragments. The theme and title of the exhibition is an analogy of the term defragmentation in information technology and defragmentation found in objects. Szemző is interested in spoilt situations and useless, not restorable, not matching, broken objects and mismatches, and side efects of human actions and decisions.” Katalin Izinger
The collages, drawings, photographs and installations, clay objects are focusing on processing data and phenomena that deal with side efects of human actions, and possibilities of mending broken situations. Szemző is collecting these spoilt situations and also successful human solutions, where humans fx broken things by tinkering, such as when we mend a broken chair by instead putting in a leg, we apply a walking cane, or when we apply a rubber band on our pants when we have a torn button. Showing the contradiction that is present between the ideal situation imagined by man, and the modalities of implementation of these ideas. From river engineering to hair-dyeing, from blockfat neighborhoods to orthopedic shoes, from divided areas of cities, to changing borders of countries. She also got increasingly interested in the Kintsugi technique, that is pasting together, mending with gold. Gold dust mixed in glue is placed on the breakage to highlight the fragmentation and the mending, to give the object value. The mending in this sense is not restoration but highlighting a new state of the object. Slow or irreversible processes in nature are present in the objects.
"A defragmentáció fogalmát a számítástechnikából ismerjük, a merevlemezen lévő adatok átrendezésének folyamata, amelynek célja, hogy az egyes fájlokat ne sok kis darabban, töredezetten tároljuk. Szemző Zsófiát évek óta foglalkoztatják az elrontott szituációk, a használhatatlan, megszerelhetetlen, össze nem illő vagy eltörött tárgyak. A japán Kintsugi technikát előképnek használva javít meg kerámiákat, bútorokat, ruhadarabokat. A hiba felértékelődik, a töréseket és javítást a tárgy történet részeként kezelik, semmint valamit, amit titkolni kellene. Azokat az ellentmondásokat mutatja be, amelyek az ember által elképzelt ideális megoldás és a megvalósult megoldás, valamint ennek hatásai és mellékhatásai között feszülnek.
Foglalkoztatják a természetben végbemenő lassú változások, irreverzibilis folyamatok és entrópiák is. Kerámiából imitál földrajzi, természeti képződményeket: kristályokat, cseppköveket, hegységeket." Izinger Kati
